We had a chance off camera to speak with Mr. York and he is the real deal: young, intelligent, humble, and a heck of a talented musician. It was also my first experience with a Yale graduate turned Japanese Pop Star. Read on to find out more..
Alex is an innovative pop/rock singer and songwriter hailing from New York City. He blends retro rock goodness a la David Bowie and Queen with sleek, cutting-edge pop production. Alex has a passionate and growing following in the U.S. and abroad, especially in Japan, where Alex has a special affinity. In fact, he studied Japanese and graduated cum laude from Yale University with a degree in Japanese language and literature. So, he’s not your average, head-banging musician—although any of his raucous live shows attest that he can get down and dirty with the best of them. Most recently, one of Alex’s songs, “Tokyo Heartbreak”, was nominated for best pop song of the year at the 2011 Hollywood Music in Media awards, and he’s gearing to release a special new track in Japanese, a portion of whose sales will be donated to Japanese earthquake/tsunami disaster relief.
