So what happens to just about anyone who has been hitting the gym for months on end is they walk in one day and just say “I am over this PLACE!!”!! Well, don’t distress because I must have done this 100 times; the good news is you just need a fitness vacation from the gym,  not a vacation from fitness. It is time for you to grab your running shoes and do some ‘road work’. Now before you put on your orange vest and join CAL-Trans, I am referring to running outside. Nothing will refresh your workout like being in the wide open world. Remember, the whole reason you are in the gym is to make a better body for outside of the gym. I do my best running during October and November in So-Cal; the sun is out, the air is clean, and it is not 103* in the San Fernando Valley. Forget the treadmill, there is no substitute for pushing pavement under your feet on a sunny day. I have a ton of reasons but here are a few.

  1. Your brain is visually registering distance, which gives a far higher sense of accomplishment.
  2. The air you are breathing is natural and more pure so you lungs have richer fuel.
  3. You will get all of your vitamin D from the sun, (a more effective source) which will put you in a more positive mood.
  4. Instead of that stale sweat smell of the gym, you can enjoy pure fresh air.
  5. You don’t to have to drive back and forth to the gym, wasting half an hour over the commute.  You just run out your door and start your work out from step one.

So whether you run, bike, hike, or simply walk, taking your workout outside may be just the change of pace you need.

Watch this video example of a great way to stay fit out of the Gym.

“I don’t want to go to the Gym”: How to go anyway

“I don’t want to go to the Gym”: How to go anyway.

images 71 150x150 I dont want to go to the Gym: How to go anyway

Often people will tell me, “Jett, I want to get in shape but I just can’t get myself to the gym”. Well, I think this video will show you a great way to get over that.

Funny little story:  I was at the gym today and a young man who was soaking wet had the locker under mine. I asked him how his swim was?  He told me “it was great, I just started swimming two weeks ago” we made some small-talk and I let him know I was a trainer. He then asked how do I get rid of this, he grabbed the side of his gut and shook it up and down. I told him, “first off, you are on the right track. You are at the gym and you are working out. That is GREAT! But to get the abs you have to lower your carbs and eat fewer fatty foods.” He looked very unhappy to hear my response, he then told me “well, I want to do that but when I am studying I really like to eat carbs”.

This is the issue. You have all seen the magazines and infomercials that say “get thin and eat anything you want”, but this is BS, and you know it. Do not become a member of the gym donation club: I have countless friends who have gym memberships but they never set foot in the door. If you truly want to get thin, you must eat less and work out more. It is so worth it, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Close your eyes and just picture you are at the pool of a Las Vegas Hotel, you get out of the changing room and your drop your towel and everyone is checking out your perfect body as you get in the pool. How does that picture look to you? How good does that kind of confidence feel? Now next time you try to shove that pizza in your mouth, I want to picture that Super Hot version of yourself, and see if it changes your diet.

I wish you all the Luck in the world, now go out there and Kick your Butt!

How I put on 20 Lbs. of summer muscle in 2 months

How I put on 20 LBS of summer muscle in 2 months

IMG 27981 150x150 How I put on 20 Lbs. of summer muscle in 2 months

Protein Protein Protein, that is just to start. The kind I recommend can be found at Walmart or Target for less than $15, it is called Body Fortress Whey Protein. I take 1 1/2 scoops mixed with water 3 times a day on top of my regular diet.

So in Feburary  I was looking at how I wanted to look for the summer and I was not happy with what I saw in the mirror. I had good abs, I had great definition, but I had no arms and my chest was the chest of a runner and not a body builder. This is how I look during the winter and especially during the holiday season, because I run about 55 miles a week outdoors, but that size was not going to cut it for my beach body so I changed it up. (First 2 weeks) I first cut my running to 5 days a week instead of 7 and replaced it with 4 days of lifting at the gym. (Next 2 weeks) cut running to about 4 days a week and 5 days of lifting. (Note- on days when I run and lift, I separate the workouts by 3 hours to let my body recover. Also I increased my amount of sleep by about and hour and a half per night to assist muscle recovery and growth (By  week 4 now I am at 5 days a week lifting and 1-2 days of running, I still do about 45 min to an hour of cardio at the gym but about 1 to 2 hours of lifting attached to that. There is a HUGE difference between what kind of calorie burn I get running 10 miles on the streets and any cardio in the gym. Running outdoors is hands down the best way to KILL fat. And don’t think you need to run 10, because as many of you know when I first started on my running program in Jan 2009 I was only able to push it to 2 miles.

No matter what workout you are doing and no matter what size you are shooting for, you should be using some kind of protein supplement. Remember, working out is a breaking down of your body and it is in the building it back up that we get the body we want, but that build can not happen without protein.

As far as the workout itself, you must slow down your sets and reps. On my bench and bicep curls, I do a 10 count up and a 10 count down. This way I am stressing the muscle fibers to a much higher extent; it is going to build clean mass.

Please ask all the questions you want.

New Year’s Resolution, 100 Days in to 2011

by JD247 on Apr.11, 2011, under Events, Fitness

You are 100 days in to your New Year’s resolution how is it going?

You know how this goes, every December people talk your ears off about what they are going to do in the new year but by the end of February it is like a 4 letter word. So the reason I have brought this up is to give the people who fell of there resolution a chance to jump back on for the next 265 days, and if you are still rocking it, well I wanted to congratulate you on your progress.

“There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.”

Chris Coy has to face the reality of being hungry

Chris Coy has to face the reality of being hungry.

0 Chris Coy has to face the reality of being hungry

JD Editor’s Note:

People often ask me how I stay in shape and it is an easy answer. I eat stuff that I don’t like, I work out every day even when I don’t want to, and I am hungry more often then I would like to be.

Being fit is always going to be a way of life; you will need to turn down extra food and tasty treats and know when to cut yourself off at the dinner table. But is it worth it?? Yes!!! All the way yes!! As I like to say, “no food tastes as good as thin feels”.

0 This Runs for you! Jetts 20 Mile run

Today when I started my run, I decided I wanted this run to hurt the way it does for all people first starting out. I was feeling a connection to all of the great individuals emailing me about the first days of their fitness journey. I wanted to feel a little bit of what they are feeling right now; that burn and that stiffness in your legs that cries to you “turn back, we can’t do this!!”

So this Run’s for you!!
