SuckerPunch

We are at week three and I have been reviewing older small independent films in the past but today I feel I owe it to the genius of Zack Snyder to straighten out some of these ridiculous reviews of his latest film so I’m going to review the recent sensation that is

SUCKERPUNCH.

Lets start by reviewing Snyders film history. It started back with the insanely inspiring redo of George A. Romero’s zombie flick DAWN OF THE DEAD. Not breaking any new ground as far as a film goes but this launced the visionary director’s career which would follow with 4 more renditions of other works, Frank Miller’s 300, Alan Moore’s Watchmen (which I don’t care what anyone says is by far the best super hero film ever made to date), Kathryn Lasky’s Legend of The Guardians (which despite not being the most solid family film of all time it definitely was a beautifully animated picture) and next years reboot of DC Comics’ legendary Superman. Suckerpunch, is Snyder’s first original film. He worked on the screenplay himself and took on producer and director roles as well. Suckerpunch had a lot going against it from the beginning. First of all there are no big names attached to the film. The biggest actor this film has going for it would have to be the young Vanessa Hudgens from the High School Musical fame. The lead of the film, Emily Browning, is an Australian native who has been around for a while but I am not sure I would say she has done anything too noteworthy outside of the awful Lemony Snickett’s Series of Unfortunate Events. I’m not going to say she brings anything new to the table as the mopey Babydoll, and most of the supporting characters, albeight supremely hot in their over orchestrated wardrobes, don’t bring much to the table. Two mildly noteworthy performances come from Jenna Malone, who has primarily stuck with independent films, and the usually powerful Abbie Cornish, who stars this month alongside Bradley Cooper in Limitless and starred in the Australian masterpiece Somersault which swept the 2004 AFI awards and won her a best actress award, even gets lost in this epic tale. Acting aside tho I have no idea what all the fuss is about. If you got to a wedding and say the DJ isn’t very good, you don’t say the entire wedding was bad you just say the wedding was beautiful but the dj sucked. It seems that now adays people forget they are seeing a FILM, and a film is a collaborative piece of ART. Even if you are a no brainier go to the movies just to entertained kind of person this movie should be right up your alley. First and foremost credit must be given to Snyder for giving the most original film since the first Matrix or early Tim Burton fare. We have giant samurai ninjas with Gatling guns, insanely hot girls, fire breathing dragons, mechanized aircraft, blimps, zombie Nazi military men, knights in shining army, more zombie’s, mechanized robots, prisons, mental hospitals, and the most breathtaking landscapes I’ve seen in a while. The story is severely lacking, there’s no denying this. It is obvious this a first time screenplay as the pace is a little slow at times and the connection between the action scenes in uninspiring. Anyone who has ever scene a movie before can see the “twist” coming but it’s an inspiring film. Back to the visuals, this film begs to be seen on the big screen, then purchased again on Blu-ray and seen on a LED 240hz 1080p TV at home. There are few films that have impressed me this much with their visuals and absolutely nothing, not even last years sensation Inception, can compare to the originality of the scenes. All in, the film does lack the scope of Snyders previous work as far as story goes, but is his most original by far and is without argument the best action film I’ve ever seen.

This weeks Pick for Number One film in theaters: Hate to say it but probably HOP
My Pick- INSIDIOUS- ALL THE WAY!! Can’t wait for this one.
